Paint!

Today I woke up 5 minutes after I was supposed to be at work, and had to listen to my stomach growl all morning until I could scoot home for lunch. Even the snack machine was out of order!

Then it rained, while I was very unproductive at my other job.

BUT, everything became better when I came home and painted my living room "dill weed" green with my wonderful roommate. The college is on spring break, so he has been cleaning the apartment in a most endearing way-- mopped the kitchen, picked up & threw out & straightened all the random junk we had lying around, swept the hallways, vacuumed up all the cat hair. And now, he's helped me achieve my long-standing goal of painting! Long ago, in the fall, I bought 3 cans of paint for $8 each, "oops" paint at Ace Hardware, my favorite store in Hyde Park (except for maybe Hyde Park Produce. Or possibly Bonne Sante. Or Kilimanjaro, even though I never go there, because Sister Rose is strange/awesome.) Anyway, I picked this color because I thought it would go well with our rather scary 70s couch which is, well, I can't really describe it but it contains orange, purple, green, and a dark red. Also there is a orangy-spiraly rug. And an old exceedingly ratty purple-and-blue flowered chair, a couple desk chairs, some orange couch cushions (the couch is long gone), a TV sitting on two wine racks, a lot of Playstation mess, a strange octagonal side table, my plants on the giant windowsill, the cat tower, my computer balanced on cardboard & plastic boxes, and other junk. It's never been a very attractive room, but I have plans for it! Really, I swear. Paint is only the first step.

Hair

I haven't had a haircut in a salon since high school, with the "nice lady" who used to cut our whole family's hair. My roommate cut my hair about once a year in college, except for one time when her friend did it instead. But now this roommate lives in New Haven, so I need a new haircutter. I did get one haircut on her Connecticut porch this summer, but I'm due for another. I like my long hair, but I kindof want bangs or a "style" or something interesting. I saved this pictures merely because I liked the hair. Anna Karina, in the black and white photos, is some 60s Swedish babe/actress, Emmy Lou Harris is basically my idol, and I dig the piecy hair on the illustration for this 70s sewing pattern.

This picture fills me with joy. Thank goodness this lizard man is not president!

Happy Armistice Day

Other things making me smile:
miso soup & sushi

Thoughts While at 57th St Books

"Debit or credit? Would you like a bag?"

Zeb, who has had this same mind-numbing bookstore "textbook troglodyte" job for over six months now says that he "hates wage labor." He can't wait to get back to being paid to do what he enjoys, which is being a student. I've never seen a clearer candidate for a PhD student. I, on the other hand, am done with being a student. To be fair, I rather enjoyed writing my BA; in a twisted way I took pleasure in long hours at the library and the way my research consumed my every waking hour and even weaselled its way into my dreams. But I think I liked more the idea of it, the romanticization of grad-student life that I had to construct for myself in order to survive the ordeal. I constructed the idea of myself as coffee-fueled academic muttering to herself about obscure theorists, mostly because I knew I would soon leave that persona behind, perhaps forever.

I do not want to be paid to be a student, but I do want to be paid to do what I enjoy. Today I looked at job postings, everywhere from Human Rights Officer in Sudan to children's magazine editor to media blogger. Craigslist has become my new facebook, the elusive "4-6 years experience" my holy grail. I like to blame my lack of interesting jobs on the fact that I need money--I can't take the cool unpaid internships, I can't go abroad merely to volunteer, I lose health insurance if I leave my full-time job, soon I will have to start paying back loan and then what will I do?

I try to make the best of this job, which would make my Midwestern Lutheran mother proud. I try to occupy my brain during slow periods by reading, writing, or daydreaming. I look up recipes, I read magazines and fashion blogs, sometimes I read less frivolous things, like Annie Dillard, (A Very Short Introduction to) Marx, and short stories recommended to me by my coworkers. Unlike some jobs I've had recently, namely waitressing and controlling children, it doesn't leave me tired out. Most importantly, I like my coworkers, and they seem to like me. I think sometimes that I ended up here for a specific reason, to listen to certain people's problems, to be kind at particular times. There are so many conflicting pieces of cheesy advice that apply here: on the one hand "follow your dreams" and on the other "bloom where you're planted." As the deacon says at church: "Wisdom! Let us be attentive."

Blackberries and BA

When I came back to my blog at work today, I found this old list I had written while writing my BA, presumably of things that were making me happy at the time:
blackberries
mint tea
wilted purple pansy
going on 16 pages single-spaced!

Today I can make a new one:
a fixed bike with a comfy new seat
my clean room
a clean kitchen floor
the woman I met outside Bonjour Bakery who let me pet her American Eskimo dogs who were almost as cute as my dog back home
my flannel shirt
having someone take care of me when I'm sick
my friends from Chapin coming to visit
flowered binder clips to hold together old class notes
the sudden full foliage in Hyde Park
